We are proud to announce the release of Project Penelope version 1.1! A few community member worked together the past few week and added some exciting modifications to the original Project Penelope. Most notable change is the adding of the four other civilizations that were available in the final version of Age of Empires Online!
What is Project Penelope
There was a version of the Age of Empires Online from long before release that had a scenario editor built in. This part of the code wasn't intended to be accessed and was locked away in more recent versions. This editor allowed you to place units, make a map, and click "playtest" which gave you a way to play the Age of Empires Online. Project Penelope is the return of this game version and only allows you to access this editor.
What's new in Project Penelope version 1.1
The following features have been added to Project Penelope within this release:
The final version of Age of Empires Online contained six civilizations like The Norse, Celts and Persians. We've added those civilizations to Project Penelope version 1.1 and they are intented to work just like the original. Now you can play with the mighty Norse and the fearsom Celts! We already have added some scenarios for the different civilizations to our download section so you can give them a go! [/li]
When you 'PlayTest' a scenario in the original Project Penelope you can select a difficulty setting. This didn't effect gameplay untill now. In Penelope version 1.1 you can use the original difficulty levels (weak, strong, unstoppable) for skirmish scenarios! For non-skirmish quests this setting is ignored. [/li]
[li]Vanity / Visual style
When gear was added to units or villagers their style changed in Age of Empires Online. We've restored this feature in Project Penelope version 1.1 and added demo styles to specific units. Lunch knights all over again!
Soon we will release a tutorial on how you can set your custom style for units or villagers and share them within our community. You can also view the demo styling in our download section. After release of our tutorial be sure to share your favourite styling there also! [/li]
We have enabled a scenario save feature for Project Penelope version 1.1. Now you can just go to sleep whenever you feel and not to worry about finishing your quest first! [/li]
In the final version of Age of Empires Online a player could setup custom configuration for hotkeys. We have enabled this feature for Project Penelope version 1.1 also. [/li]
Where to download
In our download section you can find the torrent file which allows you to download Project Penelope version 1.1. A torrent file is a computer file that contains metadata about files and folders to be distributed within the BitTorrent file distribution system. This means you require a BitTorrent client to actually download the game files of Project Penelope. For example you can use this free Bittorrent client. A video tutorial on how to install this client can be found here.
After you download the torrent-file and double click on it on your computer you will be taken to the Bittorrent client and have the option to select two files like below:
Determine which of the two files you wish to download and uncheck the other one. The files are:
[li]Final upgrade from BETA: Earlier we have released a 2183 BETA build. If you have downloaded and installed this package, you can select this file to upgrade that package[/li]
[li]Final: This is the complete installation of Project Penelope version 1.1. If you don't have the formentioned BETA or wish to be sure of your installation, please select this one[/li]
For further installation instructions, please read our tutorial 'Install Project Penelope version 1.1'.
When you finish downloading, please keep seeding the torrent so other community members can also enjoy Project Penelope as soon as possible.
Note: A video tutorial is done by Gryphus which you can find at https://youtu.be/tUJN-P-UyLs
Some stuff to keep in mind related to Project Penelope version 1.1:
[li]Project Penelope is the editor version of Age of Empires Online. This isn't different in Penelope version 1.1. So you won't have for example the MMO part of Age of Empires Online[/li]
[li]Some features / gameplay related to the six civilizations we weren't able to add to the project. These are:
[li][ALL] Chest couldn't diasppear from the map when opened it and got the treasure[/li]
[li][ALL] Lack detailed tooltips(with units' HitPoint、attack、armor、range、sight、speed)[/li]
[li][PE] House doesn't turn red block when hover over where it couldn't build on.But it work peoperly, indeed prevent it constructing there[/li]
[li] [CE] The flags in the celtics wall have no symbol [/li]
[li] [NO] "Burning Pitch" on forthess is not shooting flames on stationary targets (not sure if this is wrong or not) [/li]
[li] [BA] Garden not showing the resourse over the building (is giving the food but the number is not showing) [/li]
[li][BA] Lancer don't do charge attack when tech is upgraded[/li]
[li] [NO] Beserker don't do charge attack when tech is upgraded [/li]
[li] [CE] Woodraider don't do charge attack when tech is upgraded [/li]
[li] [CE] Villagers in goldmine don't produce gold. When not in goldmine they are producing like other civs -Probably tactic file has non-existing definitions in the editor [/li]
[li] [NO] The Seer cannot train ravens[/li]
[li] [CE] Druid and augur don't have their techs available[/li]
[li]Scenario builders who have build scenarios for the Original Project Penelope should update their scenario with the ]new _Gamesettings trigger. Adding the technologies of the others civilizations resulted in a remap of the technologies. Thus scenarios build for the Original Project Penelope won't work correctly in version 1.1[/li]
Now we have extended the original project Penelope with all six civilizations we will focus on the following:
[li]Project Penelope version 1.2: We will try to further enhance Project Penelope by adding the features that don't work at the moment and maybe more. This is a mid-term (several weeks) goal[/li]
[li]AOEO4EVER.net is a community dedicated in bringing Age of Empires Online back, with or without the help of Microsoft. So we will focus on opportunities that add to our goal. As many of you know agent_luciano is working on a return of the full game for example[/li]
[li]We believe that exposure of our community will also add to our goal. The more community members we have, the more attractive it will be for Microsoft or others to take notice of us and aid to our goal. So we have set up a YouTube channel, but also will heavily depend on our community member to promote our community[/li]
[li]We will further enhance our community and correcting errors that exist on this website[/li]
How to contribute
You can contribute to our community the following ways:
[li]The BitTorrent file distribution system depends on people who share files. So after download keep seeding the torrent so other community members can play Project Penelope version 1.1 as soon as possible[/li]
[li]We badly need a promotional video for Project Penelope version 1.1. If you have the skills to make a good video, please let us know! I'm a fan of this video[/li]
[li]As stated before, we depend on you to extend our online presence! So share this site with friends and family, on other forums or websites and stream gameplay on Twitch or YouTube [/li]
Request support or report issues / bug
